Meet Myriam

Biography

Myriam Saldívar joined the Lone Star College Board of Trustees for District 6 in 2016. As a Trustee
for District 6, Myriam represents portions of the Klein, Cy-Fair, Aldine, and Spring I.S.D.
communities. Ms. Saldívar grew up in the Aldine community, where she graduated from Aldine Sr.
High School. After graduating high school, she attended Lone Star College-Tomball and later
graduated from the University of St. Thomas with a degree in International Studies and a minor in
Political Science. Her passion for community service led her to work for the Texas House of
Representatives, where she focused on drafting legislation concentrating on education, environment,
workforce, flooding assistance, and public safety. Myriam has been active in public service for more
than ten years. Her love of helping others initiated in 2005 as a student, where she assisted
Hurricane Katrina evacuees with much-needed resources. Her dedication continued by serving on
the Board of the Greenspoint—YMCA, where she raised funds to provide programs and services
for many of our underserved children. She then led as Chair for Vecino Healthcare Center, a federal
qualified clinic, to provide affordable and assessable healthcare to many residents in Northeast
Houston. Myriam’s passion for education led her to join the Hispanic Advisory Committee for the
Houston Independent School District, providing scholarships and educational programs to increase
student graduation rates.
As a trustee, Myriam has focused her advocacy on providing affordable, first-class education for area
students. As Chair, she has pushed for baccalaureate program legislation for community
colleges—providing LSC with degrees ranging from B.S. in Nursing to B.A.S. in Energy. These
programs would ensure students receive affordable bachelor’s degrees while enrolled in community
college. The importance of equitable access to education is a key focus for Myriam. This has led to
the creation of LSC-Houston North—a college designed to provide structured and supported
education in underserved communities so that students may achieve personal success. During her
time as Chair, she approved critical decisions during the COVID pandemic that kept Lone Star
College in a comfortable financial position—at a time when many of our local colleges were
struggling financially. Additionally, her leadership helped create the first-ever LSC—online college
providing accessibility, affordability, and flexibility to students unable to attend in-person courses.
She also focused her efforts both at a local and national level on increased funding for workforce
programs. These programs would ensure a wide range of trade and vocational courses for students
who wish to gain skills in a professional setting. Fiscal responsibility has been a key focus for her, as
it has led the college to have one of the lowest tax rates in the state.
In her spare time, Myriam enjoys traveling, hiking, jogging, and rowing. She also enjoys walking her
German Shepherd named Goliad at our local parks. She and her family attend St. Ignatius Loyola
Catholic Church near Cypresswood.
